At M.Boutique, your safety is our priority, which is why we don’t use SLS (Sodium Laryl Sulfate) in our products. But what is SLS I hear you say? It is a detergent and surfactant found in personal hygiene products; in layman’s terms it is a very effective foaming agent. Why don’t we use it? It’s very simple, because it causes more harm than good.
Here are 5 reasons why M.Boutique is SLS free:
1. It causes eye irritation
Sodium Laureth Sulfate and its cousin Sodium Laryl Sulfate are both highly irritating chemicals. Unfortunately they can cause permanent eye damage in children and may cause catoracts in adults.
2. It causes skin allergies and disorders
We read advertising phrases such as “get beautiful soft skin” or “shiny, healthy hair” all the time but these can be far from the truth as soaps and shampoos containing SLS can actually cause skin damage, damage to the hair follicle, dandruff, dermatitis, canka sores and other allergies.
3. It is used as a repellent & pesticide
SLS is not only used in flea & tick repellent shampoo for cats and dogs but is frequently used to kill insects and plants.
4. It emits toxic fumes when heated
When you’re enjoying a nice shower and you’re lathering your body with soap under the hot water, remember that toxic sodium oxides are released when SLS is heated. Second thoughts anyone?
5. It pollutes our water
If all this wasn’t enough, SLS is toxic to aquatic life and could result in bioaccumulation (bioaccumulation occurs when aquatic life or another organism absorbs a substance at a faster rate than that at which the substance is excreted). SLS could also be a potential threat to our water; many filters can’t detect it so it can also make its way into our taps, thus into our drinking water.
If you think about it, eating chemicals would be less harmful because at least the enzymes in your saliva and the acid in your stomach would break them down and flush them out of your system but by putting them on your skin, they are absorbed directly into your bloodstream and the only way to get rid of them is to sweat…a lot!
Therefore, the healthiest and easiest option is to choose SLS free products, in doing so, you won’t have to worry about any potentially dangerous chemicals finding their way into your household and onto your skin.
