There are so many things that make Winter a beautiful season; the changing colors, the snow, the seasonal smells etc but unfortunately the cold, dry air that comes with such a pretty season, can cause problems with our skin, leaving it dull, dry and sometimes even flaky.
When we get home, on goes the heating and suddenly we feel warm again but did you know that doing this actually does more harm than good? The heating draws moisture from the air, your home becomes dryer and as a result absorbs the moisture from your skin. A similar thing happens when you wash your hands in hot water, take a hot shower or bath; the natural oils and moisture are stripped away, your skin feels tight, itchy and dry and in some cases may even begin to crack.
But I can’t live in a cold house, I hear you say…
Absolutely not! So it’s important to know what to do to protect your skin in these harsh conditions. Here are 6 tips on how to counteract the negative effects of cold weather, especially on your hands:
Drink
Drinking water is important to hydrate your skin from the inside out. We all love to warm ourselves up with hot chocolate, tea and coffee during the colder months but don’t forget that water is extremely important too. Why not add a slice of lemon to warm water which is not only refreshing but will give you a boost of vitamin C as well.
Protect your skin
Remember that wearing gloves will help protect your hands from cold wind, snow and rain. Put a pair in your pocket so that you don’t forget to wear them even if it’s only for a short time.
Use a humidifier
As we were saying earlier, the heating in your home dries out the air so it’s a good idea to invest in a humidifier which will keep the environment moist and help prevent your skin from drying out.
Use warm water not hot
We all love to wash in hot water on a cold winter’s day because it feels better on our skin but hot water can strip the natural oils and moisture from it, leaving it dry and tight. Try washing your hands in warm water.
Use a mild soap
Harsh soaps can rip the moisture from your skin so we recommend swapping to something milder.
